To Block or not to block, that is the question!
This year our school has experimented with the block schedule. A committee has been formed to look at future schedule changes for the school year of 2009 – 2010. What are your thoughts about having classes on the block? Have your thoughts changed since the beginning of the year? How? Why? What are the positives, what are the negatives? I would like you to think and then respond to at least two positives and two negatives. If you come up with more, please write more. What kind of schedule do you think would be beneficial? Do you have friends in other districts? What is their schedule like? So, what do you think…?

I found this web site that talked about a writing program that allowed teens to write about what they believe in. I thought I would try a little piece of this with you and see how it goes. Select any one of the following phrases. Pick the one that you really feel passionately about. If none of these light a fire under you, write your own “I believe…” phrase. Take one of the phrases and go to town. Write about what you believe in! Is there any one of the statements that you can relate to? Can you personally connect with one of the statements, can you share an anecdote? Remember to make at least one comment to someone else in the class. Enjoy
- I believe in the power to forget
- I believe in the power of peace from animals
- I believe there is “nothing new under the sun”
- I believe in giving blood
- I believe that every life has a positive purpose, no matter how brief or how insignificant
Happy reading and writing

This week our focus has been on parental expectations. In the task III Regents exam practice essay, we read about two different views on how parents can and even try to affect their child’s life. How do you think parental expectations is a theme in the play Fences by August Wilson? Look closely at father/mother and child relationships so far in the play. Secondly, how do you think adults in your life have helped mold you into who you are?

In the novel, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, our three main characters have very particular names. Why do you think Stevenson selected the names Jekyll, Hyde, Utterson? How are these name significant to who they are as characters and their actions?
Secondly, we learned that Stevenson was a “cutting edge” writer for his time period. How has he incorporated some the issues of the time period into this novel?
